I have a French last name as well, LeMaster, and people get confused with even that. It could be Sailor, Say-ler, Si-lee-ay, Say-ell-ee-ay. How do you pronounce this French last name? I don't think every name needs to have a 100% clear pronunciation on the first try, but I do think there are varying degrees of challenging and I'd want to suss out where it falls with that.I have a French girl in my class. I do think Americans could be capable of pronouncing it once they are told how, but I'm not sure how it would actually play out and I might take it on a test run at Starbucks or something to see how people react to hearing how it's pronounced. I think spelling it differently kind of takes away from its origins and charm myself. So personally I've kept in the middle name spot. You wouldn't be able to spell it correctly in the vast majority of places and that would bother me. I think the main drawback is that I love the spelling with the letter ï, and don't love it spelled as Loic. I'm American as well, and I don't think it's unusable in the US. I love the name! It's been a favorite of mine for a long time, and I only love it with the lo-EEK pronunciation. From my own research, and based on the pronunciations on Forvo, it seems to usually be pronounced like lo-EEK in French. Louis is the French form of Ludovicus, the Latinized form of Ludwig which originates from the Germanic name Chlodovech, a name that several Frankish kings bore (we usually Latinize it as Clovis though).
